The Stockholm Academic Choir (AK) was founded in 1931 as a college choir, the first in Sweden for mixed voices. Since then, AK has been active with concerts in Sweden, Scandinavia, Europe, North America and Mexico as well as with recordings and performances for radio, film and TV.
Over the years, AK, has had several prominent conductors, amongst whom might be mentioned Johannes Norrby, former head of the Concert Hall in Stockholm and Eskil Hemberg, former head of the Royal Swedish Opera. Christina Hörnell led the choir between 1991 and 2007. The choir’s current director is Håkan Sund. In the autumn of 2001, AK had a very successful co-operation with the conductor Eric Ericsson in a small series of concerts.
AK has about thirty members. The choir performs both secular and sacred works, a capella or with instrumental or orchestral accompaniment. The choir’s repertoire stretches from the Middle Ages to today and includes the most well established choral composers, including those who write jazz or in a lighter vein.
AK performs at the Royal Academy of Music and the Concert Hall of Stockholm as well as in the many churches of the capital and other suitable halls, such as the Wasa Museum. AK also performs on commission on official, public or private events.
